Welcome to Clivia Trends
This site is devoted to the serious Clivia Enthusiast and seeks to promote the
interest in, and growing of Clivia plants. Our endeavor is to breed Trend setting
Clivia, with our main focus on flower color. Through this site we will make quality
Clivia seed and plants available for sale to enthusiasts around the world, hoping
to share some of the joy and satisfaction we have experienced breeding with these
exceptional plants.

Certainly for the last few years the Trend has certainly been Green, with plants
like our own Charlsgreen and others like Hiroa and TK Original being at the centre
of attention worldwide, the pinnacle of which was reached when, at the 2006 International
Clivia Conference the amount of R32000.00 was paid for Charlsgreen.
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since that day, and the breeding results
with this plant have been most interesting. More about that later….
Much have been said and written about the breeding potential of this very special
plant. Dr Harold Koopovitz has indicated that because of the absence of the yellow
pigment (keratenoids) in the flower of Charlsgreen, this plant should be the perfect
prelude to breeding a pure White flower, and could also be used to breed clearer
Pinks. |
The theory is that, if line bred, some of the resulting plants will have less
green pigment (chlorophyll), and if these are subsequently crossed with one another
will eventually result in a plant with no keratenoids and no chlorophyll, thus
pure White. We have endeavored on this long and treacherous road, and can only
hope we live to see the end goal…

Thus far all seedlings that has flowered from Charlsgreen, when selfed, has flowered
true to the original, with some extra very lovely surprises, as depicted to the
right.
Another avenue of departure is to cross Charlsgreen with plants that already
have very little pigment, but we are still a few years away from seeing the first
results of these crosses. |

Breeding of a Truly Blood Red Clivia is also high on our list of priorities here
at Clivia Trends. Di1 is certainly at the forefront of achieving this goal.
Note the White and Green centre, with no keratenoids to dilute the Red (Anthocyanin).
Besides the color of the flower, this Clivia plant is very attractive in that
it is a robust plant, has a nice upright growth habit with nice semi broad leaves,
and rounded leaf tips.
The leaves are dark green and makes for an attractive display when in full flower.
Most of these traits are dominant in breeding and seedlings are easily recognized. |

Breeding results with this plant has been very encouraging, and when selfed thus
far has produced 100% red green centre offspring.
As shown to the right, some of the offspring has been a deeper red than the mother
plant and thus we have the belief that by crossing darker siblings we should be
able to produce even better reds going forward.
Unfortunately photography is not my area of expertise , thus the color chart
not reflecting the true color, but with the naked eye, Swatch 1 number 3, is the
closest to the real thing. The throat has less white and the green is more olive |

One of the most fascinating plants in our breeding program is the plant named
Star Green. One of my personal favorites, this sister plant of Charlsgreen, have
captured the imagination and only your imagination could conjure up a picture
of what might result from a breeding program. However, it is our belief that
this plant is already astonishing enough and requires only line breeding, so that
it can be guaranteed to produce offspring true to color.
We have a selection of plants, which have been selected mainly for their lack
of pigmentation, in pursuit of our main objective, breeding the illusive White
Clivia flower.

The Tipperary Peach depicted to the left has a lovely Pink hue to it, and with
the green centre has a very cool(as opposed to warm) look to it.
This has been the starting point of our Pink breeding program, and with some
acquisitions from Sean Chubb, I am confident that we will gain some momentum going
forward.
We believe that the secret to success is eliminating the yellow Some of the initial
results of our breeding program has been very encouraging, and we hope to see
even better results in the next generation |
As avid collectors of Clivia plants we have many desirable plants, encompassing
all species and will continue to make crosses with these plants, making these
seeds available for sale to enthusiasts, as we realize that many have other breeding
goals to ours and may need the genetic material we have in our collection. These
